Putting new siding on your home can be a daunting and expensive task, but knowing what materials are available and choosing the right contractor will help make the project flow smoothly. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of siding material, including cost, ease of installation and maintenance requirements.

While the purpose of siding is to protect your home from water and the elements, it also enhances its appearance and value. If you are trying to sell your home, prospective buyers look for easy to maintain siding in good condition. Damaged exteriors may give the impression that the structure underneath may not be solid and that your home was not maintained.

According to Steve Wick of Sawtooth Lumber in Grand Marais, the most common siding products they sell are FiberCement, LP pressed wood, or natural cedar lap siding and half log pine siding.

Natural cedar and half log pine siding provide a rustic appearance and depending on the brand of paint or stain you choose will require at least two coats the first year with another coat applied every 3-5 years.

FiberCement siding has become a popular choice due to its low maintenance and rot resistance. Although it is more expensive, it is also fireproof and may be found in patterns that replicate wood, stucco or stone. The LP pressed wood siding is similar in appearance, but is available in longer lengths allowing for less joints. Both of these products sold at Sawtooth Lumber offer a 50-year product warranty and are available primed or pre-finished.

Engineered wood that is available in 4’ x 8’ sheets that is pressed and grooved to resemble multiple wood strips (commonly known as T1-11) is an inexpensive option that installs easily and covers your square footage quickly. It can be painted or stained and installed vertically or horizontally to achieve the look you desire.

Vinyl siding is an inexpensive, low maintenance option that is available in many colors. The lifespan of vinyl siding depends on the thickness of the material, with a thicker product being more resistant to cracking. Since the color of vinyl siding is integrated in the product it will never need repainting, just a periodic cleaning with a soft bristled brush.

A true stone or brick veneer will last for decades with little maintenance; however, it is an expensive option that requires a support wall to bear the weight of the material. There are cultured stone products on the market which are lighter and can be applied over a wood structure without the added support.

Consider adding a layer of foam insulation before installing your new siding to increase energy efficiency. Research the products and get several estimates. Our local contractors can make this big project a very rewarding investment.
