Grand Marais Jazz Fest

Jazz Festival

The seventh annual Grand Marais Jazz Festival is slated for Memorial Day Weekend, May 22 – 24. This year the festival includes a number of notable musical performers, some returning from previous years, and the memorial weekend dates offer the chance for a more leisurely weekend.

"We moved the Jazz Festival to Memorial Day weekend based upon feedback from past festival visitors," said Kate Surbaugh, Cook County Events and Visitor’s Bureau director. "People said they would welcome more time to settle in, relax, and linger over a long weekend of jazz. We were happy to oblige."

Among the musical highlights of this year’s festival: East Coast jazz educator and vibraphonist Joe Baione will bring his classic jazz vibes sound to the Summit Chalet at Lutsen Mountains Saturday morning.

Saturday night the Arrowhead Center for the Arts features Canadian Juno Award nominee Melissa Walker, a talented jazz vocalist who performs with some of the top names in jazz. With her rich, multi-octave vocal textures and impeccable phrasing, Melissa Walker has won kudos in concerts across several continents.

Guitar master Larry Coryell will perform Sunday night at Papa Charlie’s at Lutsen Mountains. Larry has been described as "a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion" by the New York Times, and dubbed "the Godfather of Fusion" by Dan Ouellette of Down Beat Magazine.

And returning to the Festival this year is Latin percussionist Rolando Matias with his Latin jazz BeBop trio "We Is." The Sunday night performance at Papa Charlie’s at Lutsen Mountains will feature a Hammond B3 organ groove compliments of Dean Marcellana.

Another new feature for this year’s festival is the introduction of a Cook County arts crawl to highlight the visual arts. The art crawl will include live jazz performances at Betsy Bowen Studios and Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais, as well as Last Chance Gallery
in Lutsen.

Additional music performances will take place at other venues throughout the weekend, including gypsy jazz band Clearwater Hot Club at the Gun Flint Tavern on Friday and Saturday nights, Sunday jazz brunches at Bluefin Bay in Tofte and Naniboujou Lodge in Hovland, and a Sunday night jazz dinner at Lutsen Resort.
