District Considers Four-Day School Week
Presently, four Minnesota districts, MCCRAY, Blackduck, Warroad, and Ogilvie, have four-day week schedules. Minnesota schools implementing the four-day week report positive experiences from parents, students and staff. All four districts plan to continue with the four-day week calendars.
A Broom, A Rock and You’re Hooked
An ancient sport first developed in Scotland in the 1500s is alive in well in Cook County. Curling, which was first “imported” to the U.S. in 1830, according to the on-line encyclopedia, Wikipedia, has Olympic status these days and is attracting more and more young people to learn about the sport.
That’s certainly the case for the Grand Marais Curling Club, which boasts of more than six new curlers this year, joining up with experienced teammates and becoming “hooked” on the game played at the curling rink at the Cook County Community Center every week.
Higher Ed Holds Open House
Cook County Higher Education (CCHE) celebrates its new North Shore Campus with an Open House Saturday, December 5 from 2 to 4:30 pm. Visitors can tour the new facility and see demonstrations of the technology used to offer local degree programs.
Swedish Artisan Makes Farm Tools and Utensils
Fritiof Runhall is a trained woodworking instructor from the acclaimed Swedish craft school, Sätergläntan, a college of handcraft located in the Dalarna region of Sweden. He is leading two multi-day traditional woodcarving courses and a public presentation on Swedish farm life.

The Outdoor Classroom program developed by Harbor Friends will kick into high gear this summer.
First, each Saturday in June, Harbor Friends will have a book release party at its Harbor Center headquarters tucked behind Eight Broadway with refreshments and, hopefully, lots of live music.The books include a youth workbook with a variety of outdoor activities and challenges for youth as well as a family coloring book, said Molly Hoffman, chairman of Harbor Friends’ board.
