Celebrate Summer at Fisherman’s Picnic
Grand Marais’ annual get-together, the Fisherman’s Picnic, is Aug. 5-8. A familiar line-up of hometown festivities are planned. Class reunions, contests, food, fireworks, music and an old-fashioned parade are all part of the fun.
The picnic kicks off Thursday when Grand Marais merchants begin special Crazy Days sales. Kiddie rides will be set up in the parking lot at the Senior Center and inflatables will be set up around town. The Grand Marais Playhouse presents Cole Porter’s “You Never Know” at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Returning this year is the popular lumber camp, which offers lumberjack exhibitions and contests. A series of log rolling tournaments will be held on Saturday.
Numerous contests occur throughout the weekend, including Buck’s Big Fish Contest, the Cutest Puppy Contest, Loon Calling, the Fish Toss, Log-Sawing Contest, eating events, the Kids’ Tractor pull and Minnow Races. A Fisherman’s Picnic activity button is required for most contests.
The bingo tent will open on Friday and the Library Friends will have hold their huge used book sale at the Community Center on Friday evening and Saturday. Fireworks are at 9:45 p.m. on Saturday.
The Fisherman’s Picnic Parade begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday. At 5 p.m. is the annual drawing for the $10,000 Grand Prize and a host of other prizes. And of course, if you ever get hungry the Lions Club will be serving up herring fishburgers Friday through Sunday.
