February is the mating season for wild canines. Hovland photographer Sandy Updyke had the good fortune to witness the courtship behavior of two red fox on a recent sunny morning for about 45 minutes.

“Jumping and rolling in the snow, the female was beside herself in cuteness,” she reports.

As the photos show, the female was closely followed by the male. The antics of the pair drew an audience, including (not pictured) two other fox and a group of curious deer, which stood nearby in a semicircle.
