Shawn Perich: On the Shore
Stocking May Boost Walleye Numbers on Saganaga Lake
This spring, the Minnesota DNR is stocking Saganaga Lake on the Canadian border with 4.5 million walleye fry. Sag, as the lake is known to most anglers and paddlers, produced Minnesota’s record walleye 30 years ago and is arguably the state’s top trophy walleye lake. Shared with Canada, the U.S. side is within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, although motors are allowed on a portion of it.
Tips For An Old Fashioned, fishing Opener
This spring appears to be shaping up for an old-fashioned, north country fishing opener. Water and weather are likely to be on the chilly side.
Some canoe country lakes may either be still frozen or freshly free of ice when the magic day arrives. Weather depending, the fishing may get off to a tough start, which is not surprising.
It All Happens In April
April is a month when many North Shore residents head for places that are warmer and drier. To them, I say good riddance. Now, if you’re a part of the April exodus, before getting your dander up, please let me explain. I like April. Indeed, it’s my favorite time of year.
