Shelter expert Lloyd Kahn is coming to Minnesota for North House Folk School’s third annual Northern Sustainability Symposium, May 3-6. Kahn is the former shelter editor at Whole Earth Catalog and is now head of Shelter Publications and author of popular books Home Work and Builders of the Pacific Coast.

“Grease” opens at the William Kelly High School Auditorium April 13. The musical runs for two weekends with performances at 7 p.m. April 13 & 14 and April 20 & 21. There is also a show at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 15. The pit ensemble, Hav & the Hubcaps, is led by David Haaversen, band director at the high school. Ann Gumpers, Duluth set designer, created the set for this show.

Enjoy some of the North Shore’s best local music at the annual North Shore Music Association’s community celebration. This year’s lineup contains a variety of musical styles with performers such as Erika Haglund, skyBLUE, Flute Reed River Band, Briand Morrison, Svoh, Bill Beckstrand, and Myron Bursheim. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 12 and under. Show is at 7:30 p.m., and tickets can be bought in advance at www.tix.com or at the door the night of the show at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

Take time off with a 2-day class held by Suzabelle Janicek that explores the arts as a therapeutic process, inspired by healing meditations and creative visualization. Janicek holds a Master’s degree in Art Therapy as well as painting/printmaking. Bring stories, questions, ideas, anxieties and a sketchbook or journal with no lines. Also, bring either pencils, colored pencils or a fine-point marker. The class will take place at the J. Mianowski Conference Room from 9-10:30 a.m. and will cost $59.

Vikings and Voyageurs: Presentation by Jack Salmela

The Grand Marais Library presents Jack Salmela with an adult-oriented costumed presentation on Vikings and Voyageurs. The costumed interpreter will play Vincent, a voyageur who brings in his furs and authentic trade goods while speaking French for the guests. This presentation will include an authentic map from 1730, hand-sketched by Chief Ochagach, and the 1755 Mitchell Map. The presentation begins at 7:00 p.m.

Swing Dance Lesson and skyBLUE Quartet
